We’re halfway through the semester break! How are you feeling?

Have you rested? Have you made any progress on setting up new systems or supports to make the most of your May - July semester? Are you planning and brainstorming?

Some key things to look for to ensure you’re making the most of this time:

  • You’re starting to feel more creative. Creativity doesn’t happen when you’re DOING, it happens when you’re RESTING!
  • You have multiple projects “on the go” - little things that have been nagging at you are slowly getting tidied up.
  • You have a form of ACTIVE rest that you’re participating in, whether that’s art, reading, physical activity, or some combination of the above. This is the “sourdough starter” or “buy a bunch of yarn” version of things.

The signs you’re looking for at this point in your semester break are primarily that you are starting to get excited for the next semester.

If you are not feeling this yet! Your activities for this week are:

  • Choose an active rest activity that you love. This is something that you like to do, that is not work, that you can lean into for a few days over the next week or so.
  • CLEAN. Clean your office, desk, bedside table, or whatever you feel called to do. These rest periods are not just for sleeping in, they’re for resetting your environment and preparing it for all of the deep work you’re going to do in May - July.
  • SLEEP. I took 3 naps the first week of the semester break, and they were glorious. I’ve never been a nap person, but there is no chance I will ever hold back from naps when needed again. If you can’t do A or B, that’s a sign that you may just need sleep. So, sleep!

Right now, my active rest includes things like f*cking up a sourdough starter (again), finishing a pair of knit socks and starting another, borrowing a book from the library and then resenting the deadline to finish it, and organizing my pantry with a label maker because labels are LIFE. I’ve also been going on hikes with my kiddos and getting in some much-needed spring cleaning.

Two more weeks and we’re back to it, so don’t slack on the rest!

  • Cheryl
