How long have you been slogging? (My 10 Year Online-iversary)

Heya Solo School Peeps,

I knew this was coming up but I didn't realize how soon it was coming... This year -- month in fact - marks 10 years for me "building an online business".

I started off with Ramit Sethi's I Will Teach You To Be Rich/Zero To Launch program (with additional coaching, total $8k) on January 29, 2016:

I don't recall the exact timelines, but you can bet your fancy bottoms that (1) I made it to very very few if any of the coaching calls, and then lost track, and (2) soon after followed...

- Cat LeBlanc's $10k for 6 mths 1:1 coaching. While I was traveling back and forth to Canada, migrating all my stuff to California, and unbeknownst to me, she was making a HUGE life transition moving to Australia. Can we say high-pressure sales ("You'll have 24 hours to make a decision, are you in or are you out?"). Apparently even then I knew/had an idea I was autistic; I recall her selling herself on me because her brother is autistic so she "gets it". Spoiler: she didn't get it; and I didn't even know then how much support I needed, and how uncoachable I was at that point. Actually this WAS very soon because it was 2016 when I was moving... so, like within months of dropping $8k on Ramit's program, my AuDHD brain had erased it from memory and "reinvested in myself" with Cat's program. Yikety yikes. (Happy to share the dark history of how I was able to pull off that kind of spend back-to-back inside of a year, but I digress)...

- James Wedmore's Business By Design program - Sept 2019. I don't recall the spend but it was in the $3k range. I can still access this program and the community is pretty alive. Some folks in it I know have done VERY VERY well (like in the idea-to-$1MIL+ kind of "well"). I might even go back to revisit this.

- Off the top of my head, I'm also recalling an Amy Porterfield's webinars program (probably that was also 2016 or early 2017), Tony Robbins & Dean Graziosi's Knowledge Broker Blueprint (KBB) program, which I tried to get refunded and ultimately settled on a deeply discounted $1k for access to a program that's now an empty website shell of dead links and "Sorry you don't have access to this content" messages; Lisa Johnson's One To Many program, which was actually really fantastic and one of the FIRST programs I fully completed all the calls, if not the action items, at least... and... oh so many other things. I can think of at least 5 other smaller/obscure programs off the top of my head.

Am I making $1MIL/year yet? HELL NO. Have I even made that much over the whole 10 year haul? Again... hella no. Here's a testament to how badly NT coaches are able to support their ND students in getting results, and how real the hard can be; and why "invest in yourself" on its own never ever ever ever will get you the result without the other pieces being in place.

I'm kinda interested to hear what others have dropped big bucks on, what if anything was useful, what was most cringey, what had an ROI.... and doing a forensic overview myself. Anyone else?

Happy New Year. Here's to continued growth in deliberate, intentional and fully aligned directions. I'm so glad Solo School exists NOW.... definitely an "if only it had existed then" moment, but alas, the learning is rich.

I absolutely love this post. Not because of the money lost (oof) or because of the last little bit (I'm also glad we exist now haha) but because it just kind of... Normalizes that we all went through this?

I bought 1:1 coaching 12 years ago (that almost cost me a six-figure corporate contract, due to the way she encouraged me to market) and I ended up dropping out halfway through.

Even Solo School itself, I started because I bought a program from a VERY neurotypical coach and I just needed a system to follow. I followed the first major chunk of steps *because I already knew what I was doing*, and then was subsequently rejected from further coaching with her because I wasn't doing things her way. In spite of being one of her top 5% of success stories. 😂

By the way - BBD was originally marketed as a program for people who were already doing multiple six figures and trying to scale, but that launch was flopping SO BADLY and everyone who was buying was brand new to business because they *aspired* to have the problems that James was marketing to, that they literally pivoted mid-launch with the messaging to target newbies. I remember watching it happen, it was so wild to see. I was very hesitant at the time, not knowing if they'd be able to really help those startups with strategies designed for people who were already scaling. I'm glad to hear they shifted to meet their user base and pulled it off! Great to hear.

That was one of the last truly huge JV launches of the 2010s, actually. Everyone and their dog promoted it. You don't see things like that anymore... At least I don't, and maybe that's a sign I'm on the right side of the internet 😉

Glad you stuck it out and you're still here with us, Kit!

Here's to making progress in 2026!

Wow! That's SO interesting about BBD and their pivot. I got in before I understood affiliate marketing *at all* so got some bonus coaching with Josh & Jill Stantion of Screw The Nine to Five. I was so on the fence about James. In a lot of ways he seems like his heart's big and in the right place, but he can also be a real wyt dude and rather to a lot/very bypassy. And his 3 hr long webinars... FFS dude. Stop chatting... but he does genuinely seem to love helping people and is really passionate about what he does. The BBD library of mini-courses that are just included by default is HUGE and his mini challenges are good -- very step by step. I haven't revisited in a long time so am thinking about doing a documented repass through the program just to see if it actually holds up *gulp* 7+ years later!

I *did* meet some really cool people through the program and actually have intersected with people that I didn't know were in BBD until I met them through another channel.

Anyhoo. Glad I stuck it out and hoping to crawl/hop/not-grind/fly my way to my own version of *success*. Thank you for Solo School!
